Presentation Civil War sword and scabbard inscribed on left side brass mount at throat “Presented to/Lieut. Col. James J. Dana, U.S.A./by the Clerks in his/Office as a token of their/esteem &appreciation/Washington/Jan. 17th, 1863”; beautifully etched and gold washed blade marked “Solingen”, damascene pattern on blade front above etching, fancy brass “US” guard, partial woven sword knot remaining, brassmounts to metal scabbard with pleasing patina. Definitely a high grade sword with fancy grip and pommel; blade is near fine with considerable gold wash and original polish remaining in the etched areas. Should be further researched as to the history of this Union Officer. Est.: $9,000-$18,000.
