Long known for its precious few numbers and for its equally precious hunting permits; desert bighorn sheep numbers have been slowly increasing and nowhere is this more true than in Chihuahua, Mexico. Jose Antonio Vallina a businessman, conservationist, and hunter started Rancho La Guardia in 1982 where he built a beautiful lodge and started developing water sources for the native wildlife. In 2000, he was able to bring in the first desert bighorn sheep and additional sheep were transplanted in 2002 and 2003. Some were from Tiburon Island and some from other sources to increase generic diversity. Originally the sheep were placed in a 10,000 acre ranch that was partially high fenced. Rancho La Guardia has since added another 10,000 acres that are completely open creating a 20,000+ acre eco system for desert bighorn sheep. The lambing success has been exceptional due to the excellent habitat and genetics and now there is a herd of about 300 sheep, with about half of them being rams so hunters can expect to harvest rams in the 175 – 190 category. This permit is an excellent opportunity to hunt a quality ram in the Pine Ridge or Wildcat Hills escarpments of Nebraska’s Panhandle. All previous permit holders have harvested rams in the mid-170s with 2 scoring in the low 180s. Nebraska carries an impressive 100% success rate. The successful bidder will receive guide service from Nebraska Game & Parks staff, and up to four days and nights of meals and lodging at Historic Fort Robinson State Park. The bighorn sheep season extends approximately 20 days running December 2-22. There will only be one other person licensed to hunt sheep during this season. The permit will be valid on any public land or private land (with owner’s permission) within the defined unit. Private landowners may require an access fee. The permit is valid for any sheep and is non-transferable. An orientation session is required before hunting. This session will be scheduled by prior arrangement before the hunt. POCAPALIA TRUST FUND BRONZE This sculptural representation of the Nevada State record desert bighorn sheep was created by world renowned taxidermist and artist, Mike Boyce, and fully donated to FNAWS in February 1999. The proceeds are to be a part of the Foundations’ “New Beginnings Capital Campaign” to establish a trust fund that will guarantee the Foundation’s mission on behalf of the wild sheep of North America in perpetuity. An outstanding contributor, the late Dan Pocapalia originally purchased this work of art for $25,000 and then donated it back to the WSF to be used as a continual fund-raising tool. Each year it is re-auctioned with the successful bidder’s receiving a 1/4 size replica of the bronze. The generous bidders name is placed on the original bronze. As authorized by state law, the Bighorn Sheep Enhancement Program will receive 90% of the proceeds for projects to benefit bighorn sheep with 10% of the proceeds retained by the Wild Sheep Foundation. Anyone, including previous special permit holders, may submit a bid to obtain the 2015 desert bighorn permit unless their hunting privileges have been revoked. The permit may be transferred by the successful bidder to an individual qualified to hunt. The three largest rams to be harvested in the last 27 years have come from New Mexico, including the new No. 5 Boone and Crockett ram scoring 195 3/8 taken in 2013, the new No. 11 Boone and Crockett ram scoring 191 0/8 taken in 2012 and the new No. 15 Boone and Crockett ram scoring 188 2/8 taken in 2006.
