Jose Antonio Vallina a businessman, conservationist, and hunter started Rancho La Guarida in 1982 where he built a beautiful lodge and started developing water sources for the native wildlife. In 2000, he was able to bring in the first desert bighorn sheep and additional sheep were transplanted 2002 and 2003, some from Tiburon Island and some from other sources to increase generic diversity. Originally the sheep were placed in a 10,000 acre ranch that was partially high fenced. Rancho La Guarida has since added another 10,000 acres that are completely open creating a 20,000+ acre eco system for desert bighorn sheep.
