This release was the first step toward reintroducing muskox to Alaska. The Nunivak Island population grew slowly until approximately 1958 and then began a period of rapid population growth. The first state-sanctioned hunting season was held in 1975 and the population has since maintained between 400 and 750 animals; a healthy density for the habitat available on Nunivak Island. Periods of low natural mortality and absence of predators have resulted in the presence of older individuals within the herd and contribute to the excellent trophy quality of the Nunivak muskox population. The most recent population survey indicated that the adult bull to cow ratio was 105:100 meaning great opportunity for hunters to observe and harvest a mature bull on their hunt. Nunivak bull DX001 is open September 1-30, and DX003 is open February 1 through March 15th. This split season allows the hunter to choose between two different hunt styles. The September hunt is primarily boat or ATV based and requires more walking than the winter hunt which is conducted almost entirely from snow machines. Success rate for both seasons is nearly 100% for hunters who base their hunt out of Mekoryuk (the only village on the island). Mekoryuk is home to two guides and three transporters that are native to Nunivak Island. These individuals know the island and its wildlife very well contributing to further hunt success. To assist WY-TWS with their Fellowship training program, the Wild Sheep Foundation is pleased to offer this 2014 WGFC license. This license is independent of WGFD license draw results and WGFD preference points. Purchaser selects the species to be hunted, then selects either a general license (for elk or deer) or selects a limited-entry hunt area/license type (for elk, deer or pronghorn). Any individual eligible to hunt in Wyoming may purchase this license; once purchased, WGFD License Section provides an affidavit to be submitted by the purchaser, specifying the hunter, species to be hunted, and choice of “General vs. Limited Quota Hunt Area/License Type”. Once named on the affidavit, this license is NOT transferable. Once auctioned, 90% of proceeds will be returned to WY-TWS for their nationally-recognized Fellowship training program, designed to mentor young wildlife professionals while gaining experience and insight into the complexity of wildlife conservation and management in Wyoming through experiences with state and federal agencies, non-government organizations, private ranchers and private consultants. A 5% buyer’s premium will be added to the final bid price of each special permit sold, unless prohibited by statute. Proceeds will be dedicated to WSF Conservation Initiatives. The 2014 Montana Bighorn Sheep license will be valid for one legal or larger male mountain sheep in any of the legally described 2014 bighorn sheep hunting districts during their respective open seasons during 2014. The license may not be transferred except: The successful bidder may transfer the license to one individual, qualified to hunt, by designating such individual on an affidavit provided by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, or its agent to the successful bidder immediately following the auction. The designee must be legally able to be licensed under current Montana statutes. The completed and signed affidavit must be sent by certified mail by the successful bidder to the Director, Montana Fish, and Wildlife & Parks within 15 days of the auction. In addition, if because of verifiable serious illness or death, the successful bidder or his/her designee is unable to hunt, the license may be transferred to one individual who is qualified to hunt, one time only. The replacement must also be named on the affidavit provided by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, or its agent immediately following the auction and submitted by certified mail by the successful bidder to the Director, Montana Fish, and Wildlife & Parks within 15 days of the auction. If the completed and signed affidavit is not received by certified mail within 15 days following the auction, the license will be issued to the bidder and no further opportunity for license transfer will be provided to the bidder. If the above situations, the transfer of the license shall not be conducted for the financial gain or the license will be voided with no refund. Representatives of the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will be available at the convention to assist and answer questions regarding this license, and hunting in the state.
