Now rhinos, to me, look like the name Gomphotherium could suit them well. I've always thought, with their sturdy, stocky appearance, they look like they were "bolted" together. There is something primeval, almost prehistoric about their appearance - especially the African species with the two horns, one behind the other. I seldom paint rhinos, but while working on this painting I thought about it... why is it that I've so seldom painted them? After all, they are one of Africa's best known animals. Ironically, the many times over the years that I had the privilege of spending time with them, I absolutely loved and enjoyed them. Even though I vowed many years ago not to get caught up in negativety of any sort, I somehow feel almost pity for rhinos, and I feel this is the sort of thing that calls for me to "break my vow", and to speak up about what's happening. Rhinoceroses have existed for roughly 50 to 55 million years, originating in North America during the early Eocene epoch. While early ancestors were small and hornless, modern rhinoceros species began to emerge around 10 to 20 million years ago. Either way, they've been around a lot longer than humans, and now, in the greater scheme of "time", they're on the verge of extinction. In Kruger, where we live, it was not unusual to see a dozen or more rhinos on an afternoon game drive. Now, even though we don't get much time to go into the park, I'm not sure we saw rhinos more than 3 or 4 times over the last year. I paint them for... admiration perhaps? Raising awareness?
