Tyler and his family have hunted with Rudy several times, and he has countless stories! We start in Ketchikan, Ak which is where you would fly into and out of. We leave from there with the 70ft vessel wich we will be calling home for the duration on our 8 day hunt, the Grizzly Rose. Grizzly Rose is equipped with full queen staterooms that bost their own private bathrooms each with their own shower. The hunting begins between 3 and 4 pm every day and goes until dark which is between 11pm and midnight. The bears will be out feeding on the first green grass of the season which is where we will be focusing our efforts, glassing the tideflats with greenbelt that have signs of grazing. We also utilize game cameras to cover the known bear feeding areas so we aren't always wondering what's in the next spot. We have a 96% success rate mostly due to weather and passing bears looking for bigger and better. The nice thing about our hunts is that most bears we see are killable as long as the wind is acceptable. Our Black bears average 6'11 with our goal being 7 - 7 1/2ft and some bigger bears in the area but not the norm. Our hunting area is located on the north slope of the Eastern Brooks Range. The Brooks Range is the furthest north mountain range in North America with the highest peaks being Mt. Isto and Mt. Chamberlin with their tops being just under 9,000’ high. The Brooks is part of the Continental Divide and it is approximately 150 miles wide by 700 miles in length, extending a swath of very remote mountains across northern Alaska to Canada. The range is approximately 126 million years old and is vastly unpopulated. The mountains rise abruptly to 7000’ with conglomerate and igneous rock rising from an ancient sea bed layered with fossils. The mountains are rugged rock covered in areas with tundra and low vegetation. The average peak heights are 6,500’. The mountains and foothills are home to two large herds of Barren Ground Caribou; the Central Arctic and the Porcupine Herd. We harvest on average bulls scoring above 375 B&C. Our exclusive area is home to numerous Barren Ground Grizzlies. The average bear harvested will square 6 ½ to 7′. They are smaller than their cousins the Brown Bear and other fish-fed grizzlies in other parts of the state but occasionally a larger 8′ bear is harvested in our area. All the bears have great hair and many light color phases. These bears are a true Arctic Grizzly and are the most furious of all the bears. I, personally, consider them the greatest trophy of North America. The range has numerous glaciers and year-round snowdrifts that feed into the rivers below. In the fall the valleys consist of clear braided rivers bridged with Aufies (ice pack). The alpine areas at the higher elevations are cut up with glaciers that drain into brooks which gather large volumes of water as they lose elevation. The creeks that flow out of the mountains become rivers that flow fast and fluctuate with the season. As the rivers drop out of the mountains they fan out leaving braided gravel bars. As they enter the Beaufort Sea they are swift wide large bodies of water. All of our guides are avid mountain sheep hunters as well as hunters by trade and heart. Locating winter herds of caribou by airplane and snowmachine allows us to narrow our search and focus in on the Wolves and other predators that follow. Strategy on the hunt is to focus on tracking and calling, as well as sitting overwatch on groups of caribou waiting for the predators to show. We also try and find active predation in the form of fresh kills with active sign and glass them with thermal equipment at night. Accommodations for this hunt can be a combination of cabins and Arctic Oven winter tents with wood stoves depending on where there Wolves are active. Being able to ride a snowmachine is necessary however various skill levels are able to complete this hunt. Typically we will run two sleds, one with the guide and a hunter, one with a second hunter if its a 2 on 1 hunt, or if its a 1 on 1 hunt, we will ride double on one sled.
